Continuum is an immersive show created specially for the Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan by the internationally acclaimed artistic partnership of Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon. What inspired these two artists? How did they design the show? How much does it reflect reality? Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon talk to us about the creative process.
Change of perspective
This show without words — a completely novel experience for a planetarium anywhere in the world — blasted off on April 6 in the Chaos Theatre, one of the two theatres in the Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan. The theatre’s dome is made to measure, with the horizon line, normally at a height of 180 cm, lowered to just one metre in order to create a much more immersive experience. It plunges spectators into a thrilling odyssey through the power and beauty of outer space, set to the symphonic sounds of Philip Glass.
A childhood dream
“Creating a show for a planetarium is a childhood dream,” says Michel Lemieux. “I spent part of my childhood and adolescence going to the old Montréal Planetarium, and that’s probably why I came to do multimedia shows with projections. It introduced me to possibility of telling stories with light!”
From the infinitely tiny to the infinitely large: A cosmic poem on our connection to the Universe
Continuum is an artistic vision based on reality, full of thrilling and captivating images and using inventive techniques to transport you through the beauty of space. Among the images shown are photos taken by the Hubble telescope, reworked into computer-generated images, as well as pictures of nebulae recreated and broken down into a number of layers in order to plunge the spectator visually into the power of outer space.
