American bittern

During the mating season, the male emits a series of calls to drive away rivals and remain in contact with its partner. The male's calls can be heard for about one kilometre. The female builds a nest using cattails, rushes and reeds on the ground in a marsh or on a small platform on the water. The nests are very hard to find, because of the high grasses, the dense vegetation and the female's discreet comings and goings. She lays three to five eggs and begins incubating them immediately.
