Black-crowned night-heron

Black-crowned night-herons may feed along the same shorelines as great blue herons, but the two species have an ingenious means of avoiding competition. At dusk, the great blue heron leaves the marsh to return to its nest. The black-crowned night-heron, which is nocturnal, then takes over. The two birds are thus able to forage in the same area without any problems, because they do not do so simultaneously.
