Common pillbug

With their open respiratory system and without any protective waxy layer like that of insects, pillbugs easily become dried out. They therefore tend to hide in dark, damp spots and come out mostly at night. Amaradillidium vulgare is part of a group of pillbugs that roll themselves into a ball when disturbed. This species plays an important role in aerating the soil and recycling organic matter.
