Andiroba

This large tree in the mahogany family may grow up to 2 m in diameter and 45 m tall. Its greyish bark peels off in irregular patches. Its compound, alternate leaves are 40 to 100 cm long. The inflorescence is an axillary panicle of 0.5 to 3.9 cm long greenish-white flowers. The fruit is a capsule, 10 to 14 cm in diameter, that falls when it ripens and breaks into 4 segments. Each segment contains an average of 2 large seeds that are flat on 3 sides and rounded on the other. They are 4 to 5 cm wide and can weigh up to 62 g, although their average weight is 25 to 35 g.
