Red-stemmed aster, purplestem aster

This 1 to 2 m tall plant has a sturdy, reddish stem covered in stiff hairs. The leaves are spaced 10 to 60 cm apart along the stem and are alternate, simple, toothed and very rough. They are stalkless and more or less surround the stem. The flowers are grouped in purplish-blue flower heads.
