Description of the activity

Students meet the mascot of the Naturalia discovery room, a frog named Rana. They have to finish some sentences for Rana that explain some of the ways she is adapted to her environment. Then they draw a line between the sentences and Rana's adaptations.

Preparation

Make enough copies of activity sheets, one for each child.

Refresher course

Ask students to explain the features of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates and give an example for each.
Mammals: Are covered with hair and nurse their young.
Birds: Are covered with feathers and lay eggs.
Reptiles: Are covered with scales and lay their eggs on the ground.
Amphibians: Live on dry land and in water, have moist skin with no scales and lay their eggs in the water or on moist ground.
Fish: Live and lay their eggs in the water; are generally covered with scales, and breathe with gills.
Ask students to write some sentences using these words: diet, means of defence, senses, means of locomotion, habitat.
Examples:
Beavers need tree bark for their diet.
A turtle's shell is its means of defence.
Foxes use their senses of hearing, smell and sight to find food.
A bat's means of locomotion is flight.
A pond is the habitat of many aquatic species.
Ask students to name some animals that live in the water, on dry land or both in the water and on dry land.
Tell them that when they visit the Naturalia room, they will be able to see how animals are adapted to their environments. They will have to pay close attention to the shape and features of each animal's body and think about how they relate to its diet, means of defence, senses, means of locomotion and habitat.
