Description of the activity

Students "help" scientists understand the laurentian forest by identifying food chains linking animals and plants.

Equipment needed by the student

Computer with internet connection and browser with the Shockwave plug-in.

Preparation

Make sure the Shockwave plug-in is up to date.

Refresher course

  • Ask students to name some of the living and non-living parts of an ecosystem.
  • Ask them to locate the laurentian forest on a map and name some of the cities, towns and villages in it.
  • Ask students to identify the environmental problem discussed in the Hoo-ee-tsoom game. (Acid rain)
  • Ask students to evaluate the impact of acid rain on the diversity of animal and plant species in the laurentian forest. (Possible answers: habitats destroyed, food chains imbalanced, etc.)
