Did you know that the Biodôme, a Space for Life, has been recycling and composting for five years now? This year, our objective at the Biodôme and the Jardin botanique is for each camper to bring a zero-waste lunch box whenever possible.
Why a zero-waste lunch box?
Have you ever thought about what’s in the trash after lunchtime at the Space for Life’s day camps? Imagine the number of bottles, cans, plastic bags, yogurt cups and other packaging materials. Think of the amount of waste from your own child’s lunch box and multiply it by the number of campers who eat at the day camp… It’s quite a bit! Especially, if you multiply it by the number of kids eating lunch at camp for the whole summer.
Here are some tips for a zero-waste lunch box:
- Use a reusable lunch box or bag.
- Use reusable containers for sandwiches, vegetables and fruit.
- Use reusable containers for yogurt, cookies, crackers and applesauce.
- Use a plastic or stainless steel bottle for milk, water and juice.
- Use metal utensils and cloth napkins.
- Buy large formats instead of individual containers at the grocery store – large containers are also less expensive.
