It grows in moist or wet soil, in open or semi-shaded sites. It is found in ditches, along roadsides and along salt or freshwater shorelines. It is found in eastern North America, from the northern United States as far north as the edge of the forest tundra. In Canada, it is found in Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Québec. It is very abundant in eastern Québec, but is rare and scattered around Montréal.
