This large butterfly has a wingspan of 6 to 8 cm. Its wings are purplish brown, with a line of blue spots along a yellow border. Males and females look alike.  

Life cycle

Eggs are laid in groups on trees such as willow, poplar, elm, birch and alder. Caterpillars live in a colony. Usually the adult spends the winter sheltered away and comes out early in the spring. The yellow border of its wings then turns white. There are two generations each year.

Geographic distribution

Mourning cloaks are found all over North America.
