The Iridaceae family includes many crocus species and cultivars.
Heralding the arrival of spring, blooming crocuses form drifts of colour. Because of their short stems, they are best planted along the edges of paths and borders, under trees, on slopes and lawns, where they naturalize very easily and multiply quickly.
Once planted, crocuses will come back year after year if you are careful not to cut back their leaves immediately after they have finished blooming. Allow the leaves to remain long enough for the bulb to store the energy it needs to bloom the following year, usually until they start to turn yellow and dry.
