Since 2024, restoration work has been underway at the Biosphère, one of Montréal’s iconic architectural landmarks. Following audits conducted by the City, its rehabilitation was deemed a priority. The renovations include both the museum’s exterior and interior elements.
Exterior restoration: preserving Montreal’s architectural heritage
Outside the building, the restoration work aims to preserve the integrity of the Biosphère’s original architecture. In addition to reinforcing the structure of the belvedere—dating back to Expo 67—the exterior envelope of the geodesic dome is being upgraded to meet current standards, and the roofs are being replaced.
Work completed or underway includes:
- Reinforcing structural components
- Refurbishing rooftop basins
- Restoring the belvedere’s concrete slab
- Sandblasting and repainting columns
- Renovating emergency staircases
Interior renovation: a reimagined welcome
Inside the Biosphère, the top-floor panoramic room is being revitalized with a new look—complete with the addition of a restroom and a kitchenette.
On the second floor, Room 6 is being upgraded to meet multimedia standards, and the small elevator will also be modernized.
The museum is open to visitors during the renovations. Check the Espace pour la vie calendar to see current exhibitions.
