Description

Succulents, or “fleshy” plants, always hold a special attraction because of their often bizarre shapes and exotic origins.

These plants can be quite unprepossessing, but their sometimes spectacular flowers make them really stand out when in bloom.

The Jardin botanique de Montréal's succulent collection includes close to 40 families, 305 genera and over 1,500 species and cultivars in two display greenhouses open to visitors and one behind-the-scenes service greenhouse.

Most of the species in this collection belong to the Cactaceae (700 species), Aizoaceae (170), Crassulaceae (160), Liliaceae (115), Agavaceae (60) and Euphorbiaceae (70) families. Other succulents belong to some other families, as well, including the Apocynaceae, Asclepiadaceae, Asteraceae and Bromeliaceae.

Come back and visit the Jardin botanique's Arid Regions Greenhouse and Hacienda regularly to enjoy all the charms of one of our largest plant collections.
