The genus Rosa can be found throughout the northern hemisphere. In North America, it often grows in the boreal forest, in temperate and mountainous regions. According to some sources, between 100 and 150 species are recognized worldwide. At least ten species can be found in Canada, including five in Québec.
Native roses can be found in various environments, especially in open, dry areas, such as prairies and embankments. They can also be found growing along shorelines, in humid environments and woodlands, around the edges of forests, and on dunes.
Here are some species of roses that are indigenous to Québec and frequently found in collections or in natural environments:
Rosa blanda – smooth rose
Rosa acicularis – prickly wild rose
Rosa johannensis – northern rose
Rosa nitida – shining rose
Rosa palustris – swamp rose
