Origin and description

Perennial native to Québec. This vigorous plant resembles true sunflowers, but it blooms earlier. The nectar and pollen from its flowers attract a great number of pollinators and butterflies. Its seeds are a treat for certain birds.

Soil type: prefers a fresh and well-drained soil, but tolerates a drier, poorer soil

Sowing

False sunflower seeds can be sown in spring after at least 30 days of cold stratification, a cold, moist treatment in the refrigerator.

They can also be sown in fall, either in the ground or in containers buried in the soil.

Germination time: 10 to 20 days
Sowing depth: 5 mm
